Exciting Electrons

Oxidation Experiment - Sodium & Water

Sodium loves to give up electrons (i.e. be oxidised). It reacts vigorously with water, generates heat and ignites. Hydrogen gas is produced when water is reduced.

Sodium is oxidised by water to give hydrogen and sodium hrdroxide

In the reaction between sodium (Na) and water (H2O), sodium is oxidised (loses electrons) and water is reduced (gains electrons)
